The University of Delhi stands as a distinguished institution with a rich legacy and global recognition for its unwavering commitment to academic excellence, diverse educational programs, and modern infrastructure. Established in 1922, it started as a unitary, teaching, and residential university, evolving into one of India's largest educational hubs. With 16 faculties, over 80 academic departments, numerous colleges, and a student population exceeding seven lakh, the university has become a role model for others. Guided by the motto 'Nishtha Dhriti Satyam' (Dedication, Steadfastness, and Truth), the university places a strong emphasis on excellence in teaching, research, and social outreach.
Under the leadership of Sir Maurice Gwyer, the then Vice-Chancellor, eminent faculty members such as Prof. D.S. Kothari, Prof. T.R. Sheshadri, Prof. P Maheshwari, and Prof. M L Bhatia were recruited, contributing to the university's prominence. Five departments have earned the status of Centres of Advanced Studies, excelling in teaching and research. Numerous departments receive grants recognizing their outstanding academic work under various programs, further establishing the university's academic prowess.
The University of Delhi, symbolizing excellence, integrity, and openness, draws students and faculty from across India and abroad. Its 15 big libraries, including the University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC), equipped with sophisticated research instruments, cater to the academic needs of postgraduate departments and institutions in Delhi. A fiber-optic network connecting all colleges and departments enhances communication and accessibility.
The establishment of the South Campus in 1973 facilitated access for South Delhi residents. Located on Benito Juarez Road since 1984, the 69-acre campus blends seamlessly with its green, hilly surroundings. Housing departments in the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Inter-disciplinary and Applied Sciences, along with the S.P. Jain Centre for Management Studies, the South Campus offers a comprehensive environment. Facilities such as libraries, a Health Centre, a Bank, a Post Office, DTC Pass Section, and residential quarters contribute to a holistic academic experience. Outstation students are provided accommodation in three hostels, ensuring a conducive learning environment.
