Dr. M.G.R.Medical University also promotes research and disseminates knowledge
gained therefrom. The University has been declared eligible by the UGC u/s
12(B) of the UGC Act 1956 for receiving central assistance. (UGC letter No.
F.9-14/2007 [CPP-I] dt 12.3.2008). The University Grants Commission (UGC) and
Medical Council of India (MCI). In
1987, The Tamil Nadu Medical University Act, 1987 (Act No.37 of 1987) received
the assent of the President of India on 24th September, 1987. By an Act No. 39
of 1991, it was amended that the Act may be called "The Tamil Nadu Dr.
M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, Act, 1987. This affiliating University
governed by the said Act started functioning from July 1988. The Students
admitted to the various Medical and Paramedical courses after 1.3.1988 come
under this Medical University as per Government notification issued in
G.O.Ms.No.1628/Health, Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy and Family Welfare
Department dated 23.08.1988.

Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, started its journey in the field of professional
education and health care with the establishment of Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in the
year 1987, to deliver various undergraduate and postgraduate and Doctoral level
was keenly felt for over a period of years and was under consideration of the
State Government since 1980. The State Government appointed a High Level
Committee consisting of Dr. A. Venugopal, Dr. M. Natarajan and Dr. S.
Kameswaran to go into all aspects of establishing a separate Medical University
and make suitable recommendations to the State Government.
This is the
only Medical University in Tamil Nadu capable of granting affiliation to new
institutions under Government or Self-financing in Medical, Dental, Indian
Medicine/Homoeopathy & Allied Health Sciences(Pharmacy, Nursing,
Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy etc.) and awarding degrees under a single
umbrella to maintain uniform and high standards of education. Until 1988, all
degrees of Health Sciences were awarded by the University of Madras.

Dr. M.G.R. Medical
University has
created quite a name for itself over the years. It is recognised by the
University Grants Commission (UGC) and approved by the Medical Council of India.
The University emblem symbolises various systems of medicine viz., Medical,
Dental, Indian Medicine/Homoeopathy & Allied Health Sciences. It also
depicts the global character of preventive, promotive and curative medicine.
The motto "Health for all" reflects the objective of the Medical
University.
Admission
to this University is completely based on merit. Admission to the UG courses is
based on the performance of the candidates in the NEET examination and
admission to the PG courses is based on their performance in NEET PG
examination. Candidates can either fill the application form on online and
offline mode.
Library:
Dr. M.G.R.
Medical University has
a spacious centralized air-conditioned library with a facility of 4 reading
rooms. The library consists of 13,502 books with more than 200 national
and international journals. Also, the library has a subscription of 1,349
e-journals. Computer, along with internet facilities is provided to both
student and teaching staff.
Hostel:
Dr. M.G.R.
Medical University provides hostel facilities with 144
rooms available for boys & 244 rooms for girls separately. Hostel rooms
provide facilities like a cupboard, separate study rooms with the connectivity
of computers & internet, comfortable beds, bathrooms and attached toilet
facilities. Dr. M.G.R. Medical University hostel is situated inside the Chennai
Tamil Nadu campus. TMU hostel rooms are available on basis of sharing. One
hostel room can accommodate 3 people. There are 144 rooms available for
boys & the remaining 244 rooms are available for girls separately. The
hostel can accommodate nearly 600 students. All students need to follow the
college hostel rules as per the management.
