Named after the great legal luminary Justice Mohammed Hidayatullah, the University was established by the Government of Chhattisgarh under the Hidayatullah National University of Law, Chhattisgarh, Act (Act No.10 of 2003).

Hidayatullah National Law University is a Govt. university located in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The University  was established in 2003 by State Government of Chhattisgarh. The present law has to meet the requirements of the society, which is entering into 21st Century. Law has to deal with problems of diverse magnitudes and a student of law and an Advocate has to be trained in Professional skills to meet the challenges of globalization and universalization of law. With the advent of multinationals in India as anywhere else, the task of lawyers would be highly technical and an imperative need would arise to have competent lawyers who would be trained in the right culture of Legal Education. The university provides hostel facilities with 144 rooms available for boys & 244 rooms for girls separately. Hostel rooms provide facilities like a cupboard, separate study rooms with the connectivity of computers & internet, comfortable beds, bathrooms and attached toilet facilities. Hidayatullah National Law University hostel is situated inside the Raipur, campus. HNLU hostel rooms are available on basis of sharing. One hostel room can accommodate 3 people.  There are 144 rooms available for boys & the remaining 244 rooms are available for girls separately. The hostel can accommodate nearly 600 students. All students need to follow the college hostel rules as per the management.
